SAN ANTONIO – School districts across South Texas are watching the forecast before deciding whether this week’s athletic events go on as scheduled.
With scattered activity expected Thursday and Friday, the decision affects not only athletes, but everyone who turns out for a game.
“We’ve got student athletes, we got coaches, we’ve got the band, concessions, police, nurses. And so when we’re trying to make these decisions, we got to be very slow with it,” said Jay Govan, North East ISD executive director of athletics. “But we’ve got heed on the advice that you give us to make sure that we’re keeping kids safe, we’re keeping parents and everybody that’s coming to the game safe.”

Govan said the district is watching conditions and expects to have more information the closer it gets to game time, at which point it can decide whether to keep events where they are or adjust them.
“We’re just watching it, seeing what’s going to happen,” Govan said. “Hopefully the closer we get to it, the more information we have, we’ll be able to make a decision to decide if we’re going to stay where we are or if we have to adjust games according to what’s out there.”
Rain alone is not the main obstacle, Govan said.
“It’s the lightning that really bothers us, but when it’s raining it’s really not a big deal,” Govan said.
There are several games scheduled for Thursday night in the San Antonio area, but no decisions have been made on the status of those games as of Tuesday evening.
