mysanantonio.comTexas GOP Voters Overwhelmingly Oppose Alamo Reimagining
A vast majority of Republicans across Texas are averse to the changes proposed for the Alamo, if primary ballots are any indication. The exact ballot language read: Texans should protect and preserve all historical monuments, artifacts, and buildings, such as the Alamo Cenotaph and our beloved Alamo, and should oppose any reimagining of the Alamo site.Statewide, 97 percent of Republicans voted yes. However, officials with Alamo Trust, the nonprofit tasked by the Texas General Land Office with stewardship of the site, said the States plan for the Alamo is actually consistent with the message sent by GOP voters. Currently, the Cenotaph omits 12 of the Defenders who gave their lives at the Alamo, the Alamo Trust continued. They should be honored.A spokeswoman for the GLO declined to comment, deferring instead to the Alamo Trust.
therivardreport.comAmid Alamo Plaza Debate, Plans for Civil Rights Institute in Kress Building Unveiled
However, most discussion of that time has centered on another former lunch counter at the Woolworth Building on Alamo Plaza. The area where the three buildings sit on Alamo Plaza is slated for a future Alamo museum, which will be separate from the civil rights museum announced Wednesday, Trevio said. We believe we will have the institute finished out well before the Alamo museum is done, he said. This is not a power play of the Alamo pushing the institute, Latimore said. Officials will also weigh the recommendation of architects Machado Silvetti and HKS, which were chosen for the design of the Alamo museum, Trevio said.
therivardreport.comFederal Judge Delivers Blow to Lawsuit Over Human Remains at Alamo
Tap Pilam representatives could not be reached for comment Monday. Also listed as plaintiffs are the San Antonio Missions Cemetery Association and Raymond Hernandez, a Tap Pilam tribal council member. Tap Pilam leaders say they represent direct descendants of the indigenous people who lived, died, and were buried there. But Tap Pilam is not recognized by the federal government as a Native American tribe, a sticking point in the Alamo dispute. That lawsuit alleges that the redevelopment plan violates the Texas Health and Safety Code because the Alamo is a cemetery.
therivardreport.comHDRC Tables Vote On Alamo Plaza Redesign
The only folks that have spoken in favor of this thing are the folks that are making money off it, San Antonio resident and Tea Party commentator George Rodriguez told HDRC members. Rodriguez was referring to contractors working on the project for the City and Alamo Trust, the sites nonprofit manager. The Cenotaphs relocation is part of the first phase of a $450 million redevelopment of the historic site and plaza. The outcry over the Cenotaphs relocation continues more than a year after the HDRC approved moving the Cenotaph in October 2018. That was part of a joint vote with the HDRC and Citys Planning Commission a little more than a week before City Council gave its go-ahead to the entire Alamo plan.

sacurrent.comGLO, Alamo Trust Ask Lawsuit on Human Remains to be Dropped
Archaeologists excavating areas below the Alamos Church and Long Barrack first encountered human remains in August, including teeth and toe bones. Apparently, plaintiffs believe (mistakenly) that the specter of federal litigation might help them secure this special treatment, states one filing by Alamo Trust. However, the GLO and Alamo Trust argued in legal filings that Tap Pilam has not proven its members are truly descended from people buried at the Alamo. Human remains found during recent months have been moved to an environmentally controlled vault, according to archaeology reports. In its filing, the GLO called its existing protocol for the treatment of human remains both extensive and inclusive. The committee includes members of five federally recognized Native American tribes.
therivardreport.comDig Uncovers Human Bone Fragments Below Alamo Church
Human bone fragments have turned up in an archaeological dig to find the foundations of the Alamos Church and Long Barrack, State officials said Friday. Archaeological investigations undertaken as part of the $450 million redesign of Alamo Plaza have revealed multiple fragments, according to a news release from the Texas General Land Office, which owns the Alamo site, and Alamo Trust, the nonprofit that manages it. Archaeologists found the fragments inside the Church and outside the Long Barrack, GLO communications director Karina Erickson said in an email. Right now, we would be asking for everything to stop, because we know its a cemetery, Tap Pilam leader Ramon Vasquez said in a phone interview Friday. The commission instead designated the site a historic Texas cemetery, a largely symbolic gesture.
