UK: 'Genocide' clause to China trade deals narrowly defeated
Read full article: UK: 'Genocide' clause to China trade deals narrowly defeatedLONDON – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson narrowly avoided a defeat in Parliament on Tuesday after lawmakers voted against a controversial proposal seeking to bar trade deals with any country deemed by the U.K. High Court to be committing genocide. The amendment to the government’s post-Brexit trade bill was largely designed to force international action in addressing China’s alleged human rights abuses against the Uighur minority in the far western Xinjiang region. If the court makes a preliminary ruling against that country, Britain’s government would be forced to revoke bilateral trade agreements. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab last week called the trade bill amendment “well-meaning” but ineffective and counter-productive. Johnson’s office said his government had a “proud record” standing up for human rights in China.

UK court rejects libel suit from Russian over Steele dossier
Read full article: UK court rejects libel suit from Russian over Steele dossierLONDON – Britain’s High Court on Friday dismissed a libel claim by a Russian businessman against the author of a report on U.S. President Donald Trump’s alleged links to Russia and Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Judge Mark Warby ruled that the references to Gubarev in the Steele dossier were defamatory and their publication “caused serious harm to his reputation.” But he said Steele could not be held responsible for making the dossier public. Warby said in his judgment that after Trump's election in November 2016, Steele showed the dossier to a former U.S. State Department official in the hope he would give it to Sen. John McCain and U.S. intelligence agencies. Steele told the court at an earlier hearing that he felt “shock and horror” at BuzzFeed’s “reckless” publication of the dossier. The claim was dismissed in December 2018, but according to the High Court judgment, the U.S. Court of Appeals ordered Gubarev’s case against the news site to be reheard.
