PHARR INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE

It has been nearly six months since the trucker-blockade at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge in response to Governor Greg Abbott’s additional inspections. Alicia Barrera is back in the Rio Grande Valley to see what's changed since the order was lifted.

DPS said the checkpoints won’t occur at the ports of entry, which is different than in April when Abbott mandated all commercial vehicles entering from Mexico be checked by state police. The order snarled trade with Mexico at the time.

Agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted a “rare” and damaging pest at the South Texas border earlier this month – the first time the bug has ever been spotted in the U.S.

Blockades and DPS inspections may be over at Texas’ largest port of entry for fresh produce. But the loss is unrecoverable and estimated to be in the millions.

Commercial vehicle drivers flagged for violations by DPS will not be fined, but repairs must be made on-site before getting back on the road.
