After Biden speech disrupted, U.S. lawmakers want Secret Service to protect candidates

A Secret Service spokeswoman confirmed that no Democratic candidate was currently being protected. No Democratic candidate has begun the multi-step process to obtain Secret Service protection, DHS spokeswoman Heather Swift said in a statement. The U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee requested Secret Service protection for both Biden and Sanders. The Secret Service provides security for the president and his family, including lifetime support for former occupants of the Oval Office. Federal law authorizes Secret Service protection for vice presidents and their families for up to six months after they leave office.

Bexar Elections Official: Software Issue Will Be Resolved by November

While software issues caused a delay in reporting vote tallies Tuesday night, one problem election officials encountered early on election day was fixed with a simple flip of a switch. Utility crews and facility staff investigated the problem; they couldnt figure it out at first, said Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen. More than 253,000 registered Bexar County voters participated in the 2020 primary election compared to just under 249,000 in 2016. Everything was just going really well until we [pushed] the button to start to release the early voting numbers, she said. Bexar County officials will hold another press conference once we know the how, the way, the where, the why of the problems, she said.

Michael Bloomberg is wasting no time building out his campaign's ground game, with 500 organizers and staff in more than 30 states, including all 14 of the delegate-rich Super Tuesday states, his campaign told NBC News. The ramp-up both in staff and in spending on TV ads has been quick. "Our campaign is building the most robust national organization and infrastructure to beat Donald Trump," said Dan Kanninen, Bloomberg's states director. The Super Tuesday states are: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. The general election battleground states of Michigan and Florida have nine and 17 offices, respectively.
