Wrong-way driver killed in crash with Somerset student identified

SAN ANTONIO – A wrong-way driver who was killed Tuesday night in crash with a Somerset High School student has been identified.

The medical examiner said Heidi Ayala, 57, died in the collision on I-35 near Kinney Road in southwest Bexar County.

Police believe that Ayala was drunk when she crashed head-on into 17-year-old Andrea Gamez's Nissan around 10:30 p.m.

Gamez, who had just left work at Whataburger, was taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital in critical condition.

A Somerset ISD spokesperson said Wednesday that Gamez has already had one surgery and is expected to have at least two more.
