Man charged with DWI following head-on crash with police cruiser

David Torres, 32, faces several charges following crash on Babcock Road

SAN ANTONIO – A 32-year-old man was arrested in connection with a head-on crash with a police cruiser early Tuesday.

Police said officers responded to a call for a driver asleep at the wheel around 3 a.m., when officers parked on both sides of a sport utility vehicle tried to wake the driver up.

The driver, identified as David Torres Jr., punched the gas pedal and rammed both police vehicles before driving off the wrong way on Babcock Road, police said. The SUV ultimately crashed head-on into a police cruiser, police said.

Despite heavy damage to his SUV, Torres unsuccessfully tried to drive away, police said.

He was arrested on several charges, including DWI, evading arrest, aggravated assault against a public servant and criminal mischief, police said. He was also wanted on outstanding warrants, according to officials.

The driver of the police cruiser, Officer Emmanuel Peralta, was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he was treated and released.
