NISD school bus carrying 11 students hit in 4-vehicle crash
Gas meter also hit in crash; part of area was evacuated as precaution
SAN ANTONIO – A Northside Independent School District bus was involved in a four-vehicle crash early Friday morning, San Antonio police said.
The crash was reported just before 7 a.m. in the 2500 block of Babcock Road, not far from Wurzbach Road.
According to police, the NISD school bus was carrying 11 Thornton Elementary School children when it was struck.
Police said the sport utility vehicle in the other lane did not see the school bus until it was too late, and the car behind hit it and another car that was also stopped at the time.
The SUV hit the school bus just before it came to rest on top of a gas main, police said.
None of the students on board the bus were injured in the accident. The bus driver said the bus is driveable, but the children will be transferred to another bus.
CPS Spokesperson John Moreno said the gas main has been cut off temporarily and only affects the laundromat of the Windridge Apartment Homes. CPS said they are still working to remove the vehicle and then they’ll access the damage before turning the gas back on.
Part of the area was evacuated as a precaution, police said. Babcock Road was shut down between Wurzbach and Medical Drive but it has since reopened.
