SAN ANTONIO – It didn't take long for 30 canines to be taken out of harm’s way before Hurricane Harvey hits near the San Antonio area. Many took in the dogs to keep them safe and sound.
"They just need somewhere to be safe because dogs get really scared during storms," said Cassandra McCann, who fostered a dog named Peanut on Thursday.
San Antonio Pets Alive!, which houses rescue dogs at the PetSmart on Fourwinds Drive in Windcrest, called on the community to help temporarily foster the dogs because the area is prone to flooding.
McCann and her sisters jumped at the opportunity to bring Peanut, a mixed breed, home. Their dad didn't seem to mind either.
"He was really, like, ‘Bring him on in. We'll help him out.’ It wasn't hard to convince him at all” McCann said.
Peanut is now guaranteed to have a dry fun-filled weekend. McCann and her sisters were going to go shopping, but changed their plans to stay inside and play with the dog.
Even those who aren’t able to go to PetSmart and temporarily foster a dog can still help ensure rescue dogs have the best life possible.
"There’s also possibilities for you to become a volunteer, to become part of our guardianship program, which helps build our sustainability for our organization. And there's also ways that you can donate” said Jason Hernandez, with San Antonio Pets Alive
For those who may be looking for a permanent companion, adoption is an option too.
"We like to call that a ‘foster win,’” Hernandez said.
