Dry rot or termites?

Observing any kind of anomaly within the structure of wood in your house may automatically prompt a bout of paranoia. "Is that board deteriorating because of dry rot, or the dreaded termite?"

Put your mind at ease with the explanation of one key difference that will tell you if the holes in the wood are due to the pesky insects or not.

If termites are guilty, you will see traces of mud within the "tunnels" that they travel along while eating the cellulose in the wood. If it's dry rot (a type of fungal infestation), the wood will take on a spongy consistency as opposed to the stringy texture created by termites.
