Man fights for life in search of bone marrow donor to treat leukemia

Aaron Brady diagnosed with leukemia in March

SAN ANTONIO – A man who’s fighting for his life is in need of a bone marrow donor to help treat his leukemia.

Aaron Brady went to the doctor for what he and his wife, Carrie, thought was an infection — but on March 3, he was diagnosed with leukemia.

"We spent the first few days very scared," Carrie Brady said. "Our world was turned upside down. We have a 4- and a 2-year-old who adore their father."

Since then, Aaron Brady has undergone chemotherapy treatments, but his doctor informed him he needed a bone marrow transplant.

"The cancer is aggressive enough where we can buy us some time until we find a donor," Aaron Brady said. "But ultimately, we're going to need a donor to find a cure for this leukemia."

To become a donor, you can request a swab kit from this website. When you get the kit, complete the swab and send it back.

Carrie Brady, along with family and friends, have hosted about 10 swab drives to try and find a donor. They've have also set up the Facebook page called "We are all the Bradys" in hopes of getting the word out on how easy it is to become a donor.

"How simple that process is to donate stems cells or marrow," Carrie Brady said. "That's kind of what our goal is, to educate people for Aaron, because we need one (donor) urgently, but also for the thousands of people who are searching and waiting for that phone call for that perfect match."

Aaron Brady said he won’t be not giving up and hopes to find a match soon.

"You don't want to let your support down, so you keep fighting. That's what you do," he said. “God will take care of it."

The Bradys will be hosting five more swab drives in the next few days.

The next Marrow Donor Drive Supporting Aaron Brady is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Philip's College.
