SAN ANTONIO – Nearly three-quarters of the seniors at Central Catholic High School have received scholarships to either University of the Incarnate Word or St. Mary's University in San Antonio.
Eighty-nine of 123 seniors at the all-male private school have been awarded scholarships totaling $1,982,000. The scholarships ranged in amounts from $12,000 to $70,000 per student.

St. Mary's has offered scholarships worth a combined $1,150,000, while UIW awarded scholarships totaling $832,000.
"We are very pleased that St. Mary's University and the University of the Incarnate Word recognize the academic excellence found at Central Catholic, and of the importance of continuing education in the Catholic tradition. Many of our students accept the challenge of a rigorous academic curriculum Catholic institutions of higher learning. The generous scholarship awards make this possible for many of our students," said Principal Edward Ybarra, in a statement.
The students haven't necessarily accepted these scholarships, because many are still fielding offers from other universities around the country. School officials say more scholarship offers are expected to come in the spring.
Last year's graduating class of 2011 was offered $8.2 million in scholarships and financial aid from schools around the country.
