SAN ANTONIO – A driver ran over a police officer blocking off an intersection during a race Sunday, San Antonio police said.
Officers were posted up at intersections all over downtown for Sunday's Fight to the Finish Half Marathon to make sure runners could safely finish the race without any run-ins with motorists.
However one driver, police said, would not accept the blockade.
"He wanted to go through the barricaded area where the officer was blocking traffic," San Antonio Police Sgt. Greg Brooks said. "The driver became belligerent and argumentative with the officer."
Police said the driver didn't give up and instead drove right toward the officer and ran over his foot. The driver didn't make it far before officers caught up with him. His SUV was impounded and he was taken into custody.
"This driver's definitely going to jail," Brooks said.
Police said the injured officer likely has a broken foot. The suspect is facing charges of aggravated assault on a police officer.
