SA fly population explodes in wake of rain

Flies blanket Eisenhower Middle School

SAN ANTONIO – It's not quite as dramatic as in the 1986 Jeff Goldblum sci-fi flick The Fly, but annoying house flies are wreaking havoc on many here in San Antonio.

"We've been getting fly situations all over town," Warren Remmey, owner of Spiderman Pest Control, said.

One of the worst cases was in the auditorium at Eisenhower Middle School, where theater and choir classes are held.

"(There were) flies everywhere. Middle school kids screaming. Flies on the walls, flies on the ceiling," theater director Tiffany Klepper-Vasquez said.

Remmey said the weather is to blame for this rise in flies.

"It's the moisture -- the heavy rains build up the organic matter up against fences and things like that," Remmey said.

The good news is there are plenty of fairly simple solutions.

"We have glue traps that have pheromones that attract those flies to them. Some of them have different colors that attract the flies," Remmey said.

If you can't afford to call an exterminator, Remmey said to try hanging bags of water. He said it really does work.
