Mission Trails Mobile Home residents face new incentive deadline

District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran urges property owner to push deadline to later date

SAN ANTONIO – Some residents of the Mission Trails Mobile Home Park are starting to leave.

In May, the city council voted to make way for a mixed-use development, where the mobile home park stands now.

Just a few weeks ago the property was sold and residents are now facing a new deadline to get out.

Ida Wilkins, who moved into the Mission Trails Mobile Home Park about a year and a half ago, said she's getting ready to move out next month.

"We can't do anything," said Wilkins. "It's not our property. It's the owner's property. If they are going to want to sell it, they are going to have sell it. You gotta move. You gotta move. What can you do?"

And when Wilkins moves she'll get more than  $2,000 to move, plus an extra $2,500 for moving before the incentive deadline.

The initial incentive deadline was last week, but because the sale of the property happened later than expected, at the end of July, District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran urged the property owner to extend those cash incentives until October.

"It's going to be the same exact incentives until Oct. 1 to make sure no one is going to be stressed," Viagran said.

However, some residents of Mission Trails said the money is not enough.

"I don't plan on leaving," said Sherry Posey, Mission Trails Resident. "I'll be the last one out of here because I am not taking their deal."

To help with the transition, Viagran said property owners and city staff will have offices onsite, so they can be more accessible to everyone.

"We're going to do all that we can to offer that financial assistance to help the people make the transition," Viagran said. "That is what we are trying to do."

 Out of the 300 residents that were living at Mission Trails, about 15 households have already made the move.

Viagran has also pushed back the required move out date another three months past the originial January date.
