SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department has arrested one of its own.
Officer Konrad Chatys, 32, was charged with theft by a public servant -- a third-degree felony.
Chatys has been with SAPD for seven years.
According to an arrest warrant, Chatys responded to a disturbance call on Christmas Eve at the Dymaxion apartments at 7999 Potranco Road. The warrant states that Chatys found marijuana, a rifle and $2,000 in cash in a couple's car.
The arrest warrant states that the patrol unit's dashcam captured video of Chatys taking the items. The warrant also states that "immediately after leaving the dispatched call, the patrol vehicle's GPS shows the officer going to his residence before being dispatched to another call."
Chatys never reported taking the items, nor did he arrest the couple.
On Jan. 7, the couple reported the theft to SAPD patrol supervisors. SAPD launched a joint investigation with the Bexar County District Attorney's Office and the local FBI office. Soon after, a search warrant was executed at Chatys' home and he was arrested Thursday night.
"Anytime something like this happens, it reflects poorly on the individual officer and, more importantly, on our organization," said San Antonio Police Chief Anthony Trevino. "But we need to bear in mind that it doesn't reflect us as a whole. We have more than 2,000 officers that go to work day and night doing a great job serving our community,"
As part of protocol, Chatys was placed on administrative leave. SAPD officials said Chadys could face more criminal charges and possibly termination if convicted in a court of law.
SAPD is asking anyone with information about any similar situations involving Chadys or any other officer to call 210-207-7680.
