Good Samaritan pulls two people out of burning SA home

Good Samaritan credited with saving disabled man, 77-year-old woman from house fire on South Side

SAN ANTONIO – Two people made it out of a their burning south San Antonio home with the help of a Good Samaritan.

San Antonio firefighters responded to the fire around 11 p.m. Thursday in the 900 block of Deely Place, near South Flores Street and Roosevelt Avenue.

Richard Farias said he was passing by with his wife and saw smoke coming from the home.

Farias said he knocked on the front door and heard someone inside.

"I heard them bang back, so I told them to stand back and I started kicking the door open," he said.

He first helped a disabled man in his 50s out to safety. The man's 77-year-old mother was also in the home.

"I knew the lady was still in there so I took off back in there and I couldn't breathe," said Farias. "I ran back out and I got down on my knees because of the smoke. I looked in and realized I could crawl in there, so I started crawling."

The Good Samaritan helped the 77-year-old woman out to safety.

"He knew that he had to get them out. Just because he knew that they were in there," said neighbor Eliasar Zavala.

The mother and son both suffered from smoke inhalation. Paramedics took them to an area hospital for treatment.

San Antonio fire officials believe the fire was caused by an electrical problem and started on the line running from the utility pole in the back yard into the house.

SAFD officials said the home was a total loss with damage estimated at $75,000.
