Mercedes plows into back of stalled 18-wheeler

Driver slams into semi on I-10 near DeZavala Road

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said a man driving a Mercedes-Benz was critically injured Tuesday morning after slamming his car into the back of a stalled 18-wheeler on Interstate 10.

The crash happened around 9:45 a.m. on I-10 East near DeZavala Road.

Police said the 18-wheeler was stranded in the No. 4 lane with broken drive shaft. The semi driver had placed an emergency triangle about 50 feet behind the stalled big rig and activated his hazard lights.

Investigators said the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was traveling behind an unknown vehicle in the No. 4 lane when the unknown vehicle abruptly exited the lane to avoid the semi.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz could not avoid the semi, crashing into the rear of the 18-wheeler.

Police said the man suffered serious bodily injury and was taken to University Hospital for treatment.

Investigators said he did not appear to have been wearing his seat belt.
