Kirby standoff ends with 2 children safe; no suspect found

Kirby police seek suspect Michael Ortiz

KIRBY, Texas – A standoff at a home in Kirby ended Monday afternoon with no suspect being found, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said.

Two children exited the home just after 5 p.m. in the 8100 block of Kirby Heights.

The standoff began earlier in the day when Kirby police responded to the home for a domestic disturbance.

Officers found a young man with his girlfriend and their child on the front lawn. Police said the young man had gotten into a fight with his father. The young man told police his father was inside the home with a gun and two children under the age of 5 years old.

Prior to the children leaving the home, deputies had only seen one child, who opened and quickly closed the front door.

The Sheriff's Office SWAT and hostage negotiations units were at the scene Monday trying to contact the man they thought was inside, Michael Ortiz. Officials believe he left the area shortly after seeing his son speaking to police.

Ortiz, 36, was wanted on a felony warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon before Monday's standoff. The Sheriff's Office said he is now facing another charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly pointed a gun at his son and his son's girlfriend. He also faces charges of family violence and child endangerment.

The Sheriff's Office shared a picture Ortiz (above), asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to call Kirby police at 210-661-8515.
