Suspect charged in December fatal shooting

Converse police arrest, charge Samuel Gerell Knowles

SAN ANTONIO – A man wanted for a fatal shooting in December was arrested and charged Saturday by Converse police.

Samuel Gerell Knowles, 19, was charged in the Dec. 11 shooting death of Matthew Nieto.

According to an arrest affidavit, a Converse police detective said Knowles met up with Nieto and another man in a McDonald's restaurant parking lot to buy Xanax pills.

The detective said Knowles got into a car and demanded that Nieto give him the pills, the affidavit said. He then opened fire, killing Nieto and wounding the other man.

Knowles dropped his cellphone as he ran to his car, which police used to track down Knowles, the affidavit said.

He is being held in the Bexar County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
