SAN ANTONIO – The first charro association in the United States, which is located in San Antonio, is celebrating a big anniversary by hosting a traditional event in the Alamo City this weekend.
For many years, the Asociacion de Charros de San Antonio, a nonprofit group, has been hosting events filled with Mexican culture.
The nonprofit, which was founded in 1947, showcases competitive charro teams yearly.
Fourteen acres of land were given to the organization as a gift with the condition that it be used for charreadas and educating the public on what they do.
“A charreada is a rodeo. You will notice some things that are similar — bronco riding, bull riding, team roping,” said Irma Duran de Rodriguez, with the Asociacion de Charros de San Antonio.
This weekend, seven teams will be competing in tournaments.
"The charreada goes all the way back to the 1500s when the Spanish came down to the colonies in Mexico and Latin America. And during the haciendas, the men would get together on Sundays and practice their horsemanship,” Duran de Rodriguez said.
The organization hopes to continue upholding its culture, traditions and family values for many years to come.
