KSAT celebrates 68 years since first broadcast

SAN ANTONIO – KSAT turned 68 years old on Tuesday!

The station first aired on Jan. 21, 1957, under the call sign KONO TV.

Did you know? KSAT’s first broadcast was the second inauguration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Here are more things you may not know about our station:

• In 1968, the station was purchased by the Outlet Co. of Providence, Rhode Island. It officially became KSAT 12 a year later, when the company changed its call letters.
• Since then, KSAT has had several owners. Graham Media Group owns the legacy station today.
• Just more than 10 years ago, KSAT’s original building expanded into two stories. We’re still located on St. Mary’s Street in downtown.

• Jan. 23: The first frisbees were sold by toy company Wham-O.
• July 6: John Lennon and Paul McCartney of The Beatles met for the first time, marking a pivotal moment in music history.
• Sept. 4: The first African American students to enter Little Rock’s Central High School, later known as the “Little Rock Nine” were prevented from entering the school by a belligerent mob.
• Oct. 4: Sputnik-1, the Earth’s first artificial satellite, was launched by the Soviet Union.
• 1957: “All Shook Up” by Elvis Presley was the best-selling record of the year.
