Community vigil held in Boerne to honor political activist Charlie Kirk

Students and parents gathered Friday morning at Boerne Main Plaza

BOERNE, Texas – A local vigil was held on Friday morning to honor the life of Conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed at a Utah university this week.

The parent-led gathering took place at Boerne Main Plaza around 7 a.m. and was open to everyone in the community.

The vigil was organized to help their children process emotions felt by the assassination of Kirk on Wednesday.

At Boerne Main Plaza, the event went on for about 30 minutes, featuring prayer and speakers from the community.

KSAT spoke to one parent attending the event, who said he felt high schoolers in the community needed a space to mourn.

“It’s our responsibility as adults in this community to give them that venue,” Moran said. “And to help them channel that frustration, or that emotion, in a productive, meaningful way.”

The youth at the vigil told KSAT that they wanted to honor Kirk, known for his Christian faith, with prayer.

They said that while they were saddened by his death and the violence that took his life, they were comforted by their community.

Kirk was struck by a gunshot on Wednesday while speaking at a college event in Utah on his “American Comeback Tour.” He later died.

Kirk was engaging in a debate with college students on Utah Valley University’s campus when the attack took place.

The assassination is the latest in a string of political violence across the U.S., which has affected both major political parties.

On Friday, law enforcement officials in Utah identified the suspect as a 22-year-old Utah resident.

According to the Associated Press, Tyler Robinson of Utah has been named as the suspect and is now in custody.
