SeaWorld: Swim with dolphins in 2016

New dolphin habitat will double size of current pool

SAN ANTONIO – If you've ever wanted to swim with the dolphins, you'll have a chance next year.

Friday morning, SeaWorld San Antonio announced construction of a brand new dolphin attraction, part of its multi-million dollar expansion.

The new dolphin habitat is a 600,000-gallon pool, twice the size of the current pool.

"This amazing new interactive park will not only allow our guests to enjoy the dolphins, but also (allow them to) enter the environment of the dolphins," said SeaWorld's Diane Centeno.

Beginning March 23, the park will temporarily cut off access to Dolphin Cove, as well as the sharks and coral reef, to dive into what they're calling Discover Point.

The exhibit will include an underwater viewing area, where guests can watch through windows, and an area where they can swim with them as well.

"You get get in the water," said Chris Bellows, with SeaWorld's zoological operations. "You'll learn a variety of behaviors of the animals, the body parts and hand signals that get the animals to perform certain behaviors."

Reservations are required and it costs extra to swim with the dolphins.

"It provides knowledge," Bellows said. "We're hoping people have a greater appreciation of the animals."

The dolphins should move into their new home in May 2016.
