BERGHEIM, Texas – Tours at the hemp farm in Bergheim, just outside San Antonio, are about to get a whole lot more interactive. It’s officially hemp harvest time and guests who book tours can participate in the harvesting process. “Schedule a harvest experience and meander the hemp field, while engaging in an immersive sensory experience,” said officials at Pur IsoLabs. Hemp farm just outside Boerne sees growth in first crop

SAN ANTONIO – Hemp farming has begun in Texas this year and one set of farmers outside Boerne says they have some of the first crops in the state. The Texas Department of Agriculture began licensing farmers and businesses early this year to grow hemp after the state legislature greenlit farming of the plant. Pur IsoLabs in Bergheim, 10 miles east of Boerne off Highway 46, is one of the first to be licensed. Ruple and his wife Jennifer own Pur IsoLabs and have sold hemp products for the past five years, now they are expanding their business by starting to grow hemp right next to their store. This is just the beginning for the hemp farm industry, the future looks very promising for a plant that can be used in many ways.

What’s the difference between hemp and marijuana?

SAN ANTONIO – Taking a closer look at both the marijuana and hemp plants and you will discover the huge difference between the two. Hemp plants have .3 percent or less of THC, while the marijuana plants have a higher level. Their appearance from far away may look the same but when you get close the hemp plant grows taller and skinnier, while the marijuana plant has buds, or flowers, and doesn’t grow as tall. The dried flowers of a marijuana plant are what people smoke. Hemp is legal to grow and possess in Texas and marijuana isn’t.

CBD products flooded the market this year after Congress legalized hemp last December. Abernethy leads a working group at the FDA tasked with crafting regulations to bring legal CBD products to market. However, it's currently illegal for companies to sell CBD-infused food and beverages across state lines and to market any CBD products with health claims the FDA has not evaluated. The FDA said it "has seen only limited data about CBD safety and these data point to real risks that need to be considered before taking CBD for any reason." Canadian pot company Cronos said Friday it is buying access to the CBD market in the U.S. by acquiring Redwood Holding Group, the firm behind popular CBD beauty brand Lord Jones, for $300 million. Redwood operates mainly through its Lord Jones brand, which sells CBD-infused lotions, gummies, bath salts and oils. Lord Jones was the first CBD brand to land a spot in beauty retailer Sephora. The deal gives Cronos a foothold in the fast-growing U.S. CBD market, where consumers are clamoring for beauty products, foods and oils containing the cannabis compound. Curaleaf scrubs CBD health claims from its pages in response to FDA warning

Curaleaf said Friday it has scrubbed its website and social media accounts of health claims about its CBD products in response to a warning from the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA told the cannabis company earlier this week that it was "illegally selling" CBD products with "unsubstantiated claims" that the products treat cancer, Alzheimer's disease, opioid withdrawal, pain and pet anxiety. Curaleaf said upon receiving the agency's letter, the company "immediately began an extensive review of its website and social media platforms to remove all statements that FDA identified as non-compliant." The company said it removed its Curaleaf Hemp blog and third-party links in it, along with pulling statements and social media posts the FDA flagged. Consumer products containing CBD are not federally regulated, and the FDA has vowed to crack down on companies making "egregious" health claims.

American Eagle exec says there shouldn't be an age restriction on CBD, as the retailer prepares to add hemp products

An executive for American Eagle told CNBC on Tuesday the company doesn't think there should be an age restriction on CBD use. American Eagle and cannabis company Green Growth Brands announced a partnership earlier this month to put CBD products on the retailer's shelves. Congress legalized CBD derived from hemp last December, but it is unclear exactly how CBD products will be regulated. Other retailers that have added CBD products include Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid. Shares of American Eagle are down more than 8% so far this year.
