East Valley Track & Field: Track athletes set for regional

Harlingen High’s boys track & field team won the area meet. San Benito’s Jarrid Lopez qualified in the 100 and anchors the 400 relay team with Homer Quiroz, Fabian Garcia and Michael Benavides. Jazmine Thompson won the shot put and discus, and Lady Cards pole vaulter Emma Reyes won area by a foot. Joining Navarro at the regional meet is Mia Trevino, Kaya Dickerson, Kiera Castillo, Ashley Reath and Angelina Rodriguez as well as the 400 relay, 800 relay and 1,600 relay teams. Lyford’s 400 relay team hopes to be one to watch as it eyes state.

UHS freshmen chalk up first football victory of the season

The Uvalde Coyotes freshmen won their first football game of the season Thursday night. Midway through the first period, the Coyotes put together an impressive 10-play, 64-yard touchdown drive. Their conversion run failed, but the Coyotes took a 6-0 lead with 28.5 seconds left in the period. In the second period, the Coyotes topped off a five-play, 50-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run by running back Johnathan Jimenez. On the conversion play, the Coyotes tried to pass the ball, but their pass went incomplete.

Mom and pop eateries circle Palo Alto

One benefit of being a Palo Alto student is the convenience of having mom and pop-type restaurants within a one-mile radius of PACs campus. Approximately seven blocks from campus, Georgias Cafe, located at 2214 Palo Alto Rd., serves traditional Mexican dishes and everyday breakfast tacos. Candace Rodriguez, a current student, attended Palo Alto in 1998 but stopped because of financial reasons. PAC and its surrounding food choices are constantly expanding says Marcos Alvarado, a sophomore at Palo Alto studying Kinesiology.

Throwback Thursday: Woodlawn history and why theater hosted 'The Alamo' world premiere

SAN ANTONIO - The Woodlawn opened in August of 1945 as a movie theater in San Antonios famed Deco District. In 2006, it officially became a performing arts venue and in 2012, a non-profit organization. Were not doing it with movies anymore, but doing it with live performing arts for the community, said Rodriguez. Any exposure to arts education to our kids is something that we really value at the Woodlawn, said Rodriguez. Now a designated historical landmark, the Woodlawn has bridged the gap from its early days as a prestigious movie house to San Antonios community theater.
