Charcoal or gas used to be the age-old debate when it came to grilling.
These days, some grills can do both.
Consumer Reports tested two hybrid grills. The Char-Broil Gas2coal and the Dyna-Glo.
The Char-Broil, which costs $300, looks like a regular gas grill except for the charcoal tray.
"It's a convenient design, because you can use the gas burner to ignite the charcoal," Celia Lehrman, of Consumer Reports, said. "But, because it only has one cooking surface, you can only cook with gas or charcoal (and) not both at the same time."
The Dyna-Glo, which costs $500, is basically two grills in one, which allows one to cook both ways simultaneously. But the cooking surfaces are relatively small.
Consumer Reports did find a difference when it came to temperatures.
"We found they got hotter in gas mode, which is important to searing meat," Lehrman said. "They didn't get quite as hot in the charcoal mode, and after 30 minutes, the charcoal started to drop in temperature."
What about the taste test?
While many taste testers picked up on the smokiness of the charcoal burgers, overall they agreed there would be little difference in taste when each burger was served on a bun with all the toppings.
