According to the Texas Education Agency, the schools selected already are exemplary high-performing schools based on state assessments, yet they serve economically disadvantaged families. To be nominated, they must be in the top 15 percent statewide scoring high enough in core areas such as English and math.

"You are visionaries, innovators and leaders, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a press release. "You have much to teach us: some of you personalize student learning, others engage parents and communities in the work and life of your local schools and still others develop strong and forward-thinking leaders from among your teaching staff."

Blue Ribbon Schools was founded in 1982 and recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels.
