SAN ANTONIO – Well folks, I had my doubts, but I’m feeling a lot better about this season of “The Bachelorette.”
The first week of dates kicked off with a bang. There were wild twists and turns I never saw coming and I hope this is an indicator of the season. To top it off, Rachel is growing on me a lot. I like her more and more. I have high hopes that she’ll find love.

Let’s get to the show. First up, eight of the guys were eager to go on the first group date of the season. Here are some of the highlights:
- “Bachelorette” superfans Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis helped Rachel with a “husband material obstacle course.” Can I just say Ashton and Mila are the cutest! I loved all their witty comments. This was so much fun to watch. It was definitely one of my favorite group dates.
- Lucas (a.k.a. “Whaboom” guy) won the competition with a little sneakiness and you know it caused a stir. Some of the guys are over his obnoxious antics, especially Blake. He was quick to let Rachel know Lucas is not there for the right reasons. Honestly, I can’t stand Lucas. He is ridiculous and needs to get over himself. On the other hand, Blake seems like a troublemaker. You know this isn’t going to end well.
- Overall, this date was a snooze fest. Rachel was not feeling the romance and neither was I.
- Dean and his perfect smile turned things around. He walked away with the group date rose and part of Rachel’s heart. I had my doubts about him, but he’s pretty adorable. I don’t think he’ll make it to the final two, but I predict he’ll be sticking around for a while.
Peter got the first one-on-one date. He won Rachel and her dog over at Barkfest in Palm Springs. I’m a dog lover so this was pretty much the cutest thing ever. I’m getting good vibes from him. It also helps that I can get lost in his eyes. Oh, and Rachel did too. The other guys better watch out.
The biggest shocker of the night came in the second group date. Everything went down after a friendly game of basketball. DeMario was stealing the ball and Rachel’s attention, but it was short lived.
A mystery woman showed up and said they were together for months and he still had key to her apartment. Say what?! Rachel was shocked and quick to confront him. My jaw dropped when he was faced with the truth. His smooth talking was not enough to save him from the web of lies he was weaving. Thankfully, he got the boot. He tried to be cool and play it off, but it was clear he got caught.
This situation was so awkward to watch. It left me with a flurry of questions like what was he thinking? Has he never seen this show before? Did he not think he was going to get caught? What a joke. As for the mystery woman, I can’t help but think her story is a little sketchy, but DeMario is still wrong, way wrong. What a hot mess. I’m just glad his slimy behavior got the best of him sooner rather than later.
I wanted to throw the remote when he showed up at the cocktail party talking about “character assassination.”
This guy can’t be serious! The men in the house were fired up too. Who can blame them for feeling betrayed?
Just as Rachel was about to talk to DeMario, we were left with a “to be continued.” Now we have to wait another week to find out what happens. I don’t think any amount of explaining can get him out of this hole.
Don’t miss a minute of the romance Mondays at 7 p.m. on KSAT 12.
