Spring breakers cope with high gas costs

Shorter driving distances, carpooling ways to shave the driving bill

SAN ANTONIO – Harold Rojas was already pumping  his second $50 tank of gas into his SUV Friday, and he was only half-way to his destination.

Driving from the Valley to Dallas for spring break with the family, he found a way to economize: carpooling.

"We also have friends who have family up there. We decided to go together to save on gas,"  Rojas said.

Traveling Texas for spring break will cost plenty.  The average price statewide, according to AAA, is $3.59 a gallon.

Fill up before you leave San Antonio, because it's cheaper here at $3.55 a gallon on average.

But that's up 20 cents in the past month and 16 cents more than last spring break. An average 14-gallon tank is costing drivers $2 more this year compared to last, according to AAA.

That's $2 Erika Jaramillo could use. The price of gas is not just a factor in how far she drives for her family's spring trip.

"Actually, they're a factor just taking my kids to school," she said while filling up her Suburban.

While the kids are out of school for a week, Jaramillo said they probably will go to Corpus Christi and no farther.

A round-trip drive to Corpus in a Chevy Traverse will cost $61 in gas, according to AAA trip calculator. A Dallas vacation will take $115 in gas money. And a trip to the beaches of South Padre will need about $145 in gas.

As for Rojas and his cross-state drive, it will cost $260 in gas. He's grateful to share the ride and the costs.
