Construction worker dies after fall from 281 bridge

Worker plunged 50 feet to death from new bridge over 281

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police and the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating the death of a construction worker on the far North Side.

According to a detective at the scene, the 36-year-old man was working on the construction of a bridge over Highway 281 near Loop 1604 when he fell to his death around 4 a.m. Monday.

He said the worker was putting corrugated metal into the bridge frame when the accident happened.

The detective said the worker appeared to be wearing a safety harness at the time, but may not have attached it to anything.

After the accident, about a dozen other workers, wearing fluorescent vests with the name "Williams Brothers" on the back, stood around with their heads hung, apparently distraught by what some witnessed firsthand.

Highway 281 had been shut down in both directions overnight because of the construction work. and was due to reopen at 5 a.m.

Due to the accident, the southbound lanes remained closed until just before 6 a.m.
