South San ISD reorganizes board for second year in a row

Rose Marie Martinez voted as new president

SAN ANTONIO – For the second time in as many years, the South San ISD school board voted to reorganize its leadership and the move is drawing mixed reactions from parents.

The board voted 5-2 to name Rose Marie Martinez president, Carlos Longoria vice president and JoeJo Savage secretary at a special board meeting Tuesday night.

They replaced president Helen Madla, vice president Trinidad Mata and Rose Marie Martinez, who was secretary.

"This has been a political machine for years and when they don't like something they turn it over and hopefully this is a good step," said Stacie Estrada, who has three children in the district and lost in the November 2012 race in District 7 against Savage.

"We set a precedence a year ago that anyone wanting to take on the extra responsibility and learn a little bit more and accept the challenge would be willing to do that," said Martinez.

Following the vote, the board went into executive session for about an hour. After returning the only action taken was a unanimously passed motion to send all teachers in the district a letter assuring them that their jobs were safe.

Board members did not discuss the suspension of Zamora middle school principal Patricia Annunzio, who according to parents was suspended for her failing to address multiple bullying complaints on campus.

Parents were also mixed on whether the board's reorganization Tuesday night was part of a bigger power struggle between members and superintendent Rebecca Robinson.

"There's a lot of rumors out there that people speculate and ascertain information," said Martinez. "That is not correct."
