VIA unveils streetcar design concepts

3 designs prepared to be submitted to board

VIA Metropolitan Transit's streetcar plan continued to take shape Thursday at a special board meeting.

VIA has narrowed about a dozen concepts for the actual design of the streetcars themselves down to three to present to the board for questions and feedback.

"They all three have in common that they're modern streetcars. They're not old-style, like (the ones in) New Orleans. They're all modern, sleek-looking vehicles. They're all approximately 75 feet long and they're all very modern-looking vehicles," said VIA Senior Vice President of Development Brian Buchanan.

Members at Thursday's meeting are talking about the basics, trying to nail down VIA's vision for shape and size.

It's the first step in the procurement process, after which vendors will interpret them and let them know what is actually feasible.

The streetcars will have exterior and interior lights and will have large windows that don't open.

Color will be discussed further down the road, when planners dive into the details of design.

Buchanan is hoping to send the procurement package out in April, following feedback from Thursday's meeting.
