After losing 1,000 jobs due to massive state funding cuts in 2011, the Northside Independent School District has announced it has 1,000 positions available for the upcoming school year.
"This really does get us back to where we were four years ago in our staffing," said Pascual Gonzalez, NISD spokesman.
Some of the district's funding already had been restored as well.
He said the school board approved 296 hires, on top of the yearly 500-700 vacancies due to retirements and resignations.
In time for the new school year, Gonzalez also said the board is expected to adopt a 3 percent pay raise for employees.
Gonzalez said he expects 20,000 people will apply online.
He said the jobs run the gamut: teachers, administrators, counselors, librarians, nurses, bus drivers, cafeteria cooks, secretaries, among others.
He said certifications and credentials are required for certain positions; others have posted minimum qualifications.
"Remember that we will take your fingerprints and you must pass a criminal background check to get a job with Northside ISD," Gonzalez said.
He said NISD continues to grow, opening two more schools.
Gonzalez said, "We're bringing another 2,500 new students, so we need to hire staff to manage all of that."
