SAN ANTONIO – Many San Antonians will mark Mexico's independence from Spain today and throughout the week with celebrations across town.
The city is hosting a Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebration Tuesday for seniors from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

The event will include food, mariachi music and contests for regional costumes and table decorations. More than 1,400 senior citizens are expected to gather for the event.

The city will also hold other activities in Market Square and La Villita this weekend. El Día de los Niños, a culture, health, and fitness event, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at La Villita to celebrate the wellness of children and families.
Activities will include zumba, basketball, soccer, and art workshops. Art vendors, health and wellness informational tables, and food demonstrations hosted by Walmart will be on hand. Click here for more information.
The Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission will host a Mariach concert Saturday, Sept. 20, at Arneson River Theatre. The event gets underway at 5:30 p.m. and features middle and high school mariachi groups from San Antonio and surrounding Texas cities. Groups are awarded a stipend to go towards their respective mariachi programs and to encourage cultural education through music and the arts.
The Mariachi Concert includes special Folklórico and Flamenco dance performances from the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Dance Company.
