SAN ANTONIO – One person was killed in head-on crash in Western Bexar County early Friday morning.
Bexar County sheriff's deputies said an 18-wheeler and a Ford Focus collided on Culebra Road (FM 471) near Old Talley Road around 6 a.m.
"We had an 18-wheeler that was traveling westbound on Culebra. (The driver) says a school bus pulled out in front of him. He wanted to avoid hitting that school bus, so he veered over into the left," said James Keith, Bexar County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
The 18-wheeler driver told deputies he pulled into the other lane to avoid the bus and struck the Ford Focus head-on.
The Ford Focus driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's name was not immediately released.
The 18-wheeler driver said the bus did not stop.
Traffic in the area was detoured for more than five hours while sheriff's deputies investigated and a Hazmat crew from the Texas Department of Transportation cleaned up the fuel spill.
Some Northside Independent School District bus routes were also running behind schedule.
