SAN ANTONIO – They came by the hundreds.
From cities and towns, from near and far police officers gathered to say goodbye to fallen fellow cop Mike Villareal.
The Pearsall officer died Sunday while transporting a juvenile to the detention facility in Jourdanton.
DPS investigators say his patrol car collided with a pick-up truck on Highway 97 about five miles west of Jourdanton.
The truck driver and the juvenile both suffered serious injuries.
Saturday morning officers from Killeen to Corpus Christi readied outside the funeral home for a procession to St. Mary's Catholic Church in downtown San Antonio.
Officer Villareal's family requested privacy for the funeral mass.
After the mass a long line of police cars joined the funeral procession to Sunset Memorial Park for officer Villareal's burial.
Pearsall's city manager says the 50 year-old Villareal had joined the police department a few months ago.
DPS is still investigating how the fatal crash happened.
