SAN ANTONIO – A groundbreaking was held Wednesday for a new San Antonio Water System operations center.

The $10.1 million site will improve service for much of the city's West Side area that was once operated by BexarMet Water District.

The site will also provide centralized operations to accommodate the city's rapid growth and is the first step in updating several operations centers to speed up service across the city.

Crews based at the site off Highway 90 will be relocated from SAWS Northwest and Mission Road Service Centers.

The last time San Antonio built a new water/wastewater operations center was in 1973.

"The West Side Operations Center will provide a closer site with better access to highways," said SAWS Vice President of Distribution and Collection Mike Brinkmann. "The end result for our customers will be faster response times for both day-to-day and emergency situations. We will also be able to reduce transportation costs."
