Schertz, Seguin say proposed landfill poses threat to water supply

Opponents say they understand need, want project moved elsewhere

The cities of Schertz and Seguin have joined forces to fight a proposed landfill.

A joint press release from the Guadalupe County municipalities was released Monday. Officials are taking a stand against the proposed Post Oak landfill, which would be located on the outcrop of the recharge zone for the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer.

The Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer supplies water to the Schertz-Seguin Local Government Corporation. The San Antonio Water System is also a customer, according to the SSLGC.

"It is so important that this not happen at this time," Seguin Mayor Don Keil said.

Keil said the fight against the Post Oak landfill east of Seguin started as a "not in my backyard campaign." But now, Keil said it has to do with the proposed plan that could put the water supply at risk.

"They want to take a Glad bag full of toxic waste and float it in our water source," Keil said.

The proposed Post Oak plans include a geo-synthetic liner between the aquifer and landfill, according to the press release from Schertz and Seguin. Opponents of the proposed landfill don't think the liner is enough.

Post Oak Clean Green, Inc. owns the site. KSAT-12 reached out to owner Tom Funderberg and his lawyer, John Riley with Jackson Gilmour & Dobbs, for comment but never got a response.

The company's website says all landfills must have monitoring wells to detect any groundwater contamination. If groundwater is contaminated, the owner/operator is required to clean it up to acceptable standards.

Meanwhile, a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality spokeswoman said the Post Oak landfill application is in the contested case hearing process at the state office of administrative hearings. Once that process is completed, she said the application will go in front of TCEQ commissioners for a decision.

Opponents of the landfill, including the Guadalupe County Groundwater Conservation District, say they understand the need for proper disposal of garbage and waste. However, they wish the proposed dump would be somewhere other than 7787 FM 1150, which is close to Luling.
