Driver of pickup that hit church bus head-on, killing 13, out of hospital

DPS to submit evidence to Uvalde County DA

UVALDE COUNTY, Texas – Jack Dillon Young, 20, the driver of the pickup that crashed head-on with a church bus, killing 13 people, has been released from University Hospital.

A witnesses said the 20-year-old told him while he was pinned in his vehicle that he’d been texting moments before the fatal impact.

Cellphone video showing Young’s white dually truck swerving is part of a criminal investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Once DPS’ crash team is done with its investigation, a spokesman said, the department will submit witness interviews, the crash reconstruction and blood samples to the district attorney in Uvalde County.

District Attorney Daniel Kindred said it could take several weeks before he gets all the evidence that’s been gathered. Prosecutors will then consider any possible criminal charges.

The DA said the case will be given to a grand jury to likely hand down indictments, one for each person aboard the church bus. Only one passenger survived.

In the meantime, Kindred said, both his office and DPS have victim advocates working with the victims’ families.
