Discarded syringe leads police to home burglary suspect

John Saenz, 27, accused of stealing jewelry worth more than $100K

SAN ANTONIO – DNA from a discarded syringe has helped San Antonio police identify a suspect in a home burglary.

John Saenz, 27 was arrested Wednesday on a charge of burglary. However, it appears more charges could be to come because police suspect he may have committed additional burglaries in the area.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, a homeowner reported the burglary, in the 19200 block of Reata Trail, back on March 29.

The woman told police she had gone out for a while to eat then returned home and found her back door had been forced open.

She told investigators she was missing a large amount of expensive jewelry and about $1,000 in cash. The affidavit said the jewelry is worth more than $100,000.

The woman also handed over to investigators a syringe  which had been left in her home.

The affidavit said police had the syringe tested for DNA and it came back as a match for Saenz.
