Man charged with DWI in deadly crash that left 1 dead on Loop 410

SAN ANTONIOUPDATE 1/2/19 9:15 p.m.: Authorities have identified the man suspected of causing a deadly crash on New Year's Day. 

Omar Vasquez-Cardenas is charged with driving while intoxicated. 

A blood draw warrant said the San Antonio police officer who arrived to the crash on Loop 410, near Marbach Road, noticed the driver had bloodshot eyes.

The officer also noted he smelled alcohol on Vasquez-Cardenas.

The passenger in Vasquez-Cardenas's car died after he was thrown from the back seat. 



UPDATE 1/2/19 AM: The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the man killed in a vehicle crash late Tuesday night on the city's West Side.

Miguel Vasquez, 53, died after he was ejected from the back seat of a Chevrolet Avalanche through a back window during a crash on Loop 410 near Marbach Road. Vasquez was then run over by two oncoming vehicles, police said. 

Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was found to be intoxicated and placed under arrest for DWI, police said. That person has not been identified.

One person is dead after a crash on the city’s West Side on Loop 410 South at Marbach Road.

Authorities said the driver of a Chevrolet Avalanche was heading south on Loop 410 and lost control, hitting a median. A backseat passenger was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected through a back window.

The passenger landed on the northbound lanes of Loop 410, where he was run over by three vehicles, all of which stopped. 

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the driver of the Avalanche may have been intoxicated.
