SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio firefighter who was severely burned in a massive blaze at the Ingram Square shopping center last month is improving health-wise, but remains critically ill, a spokesperson for the San Antonio Fire Department said.
Brad Phipps suffered severe burns while fighting a fire that took the life of fellow firefighter Scott Deem. On Friday, SAFD spokesperson Joe Arrington said Phipps remains at the Burn Intensive Care Unit at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at San Antonio Military Medical Cente.

Arrington said Phipps has been undergoing several surgeries a week to treat his burn wounds, and that while he remains critically ill, he "continues to grow stronger."
Phipps has undergone physical therapy to stand on his own, has been taken off of a ventilator and has even talked to visitors.
Arrington said Phipps has "a long road ahead of him," and asked for the San Antonio community's continued prayers and support for Phipps' and Deem's family.
