Resignation of Dr. Jose Moreno follows tumultuous year for school district

SAN ANTONIO – La Vernia ISD Superintendent Dr. Jose Moreno has resigned following a special meeting by the Board of Trustees on Thursday night.

The resignation was confirmed by Cynthia Buerkle, the school board president Friday morning.

The board did not give a reason for Moreno’s resignation. 

An agenda of Thursday's special meeting showed that they discussed the superintendent's duties, evaluation, employment contract, as well as the proposed resignation agreement.

Shannon Burns, the Executive Director of Human Resources for La Vernia ISD, will be the interim superintendent starting Friday.

The resignation comes after a tumultuous year for the district that was plagued with sexual assault and hazing allegations at La Vernia High School.

Moreno started as superintendent for La Vernia ISD back in 2014.
