Backyard bonfire spreads to East Side home, causing damage

Homeowner, guests safely escaped fire

SAN ANTONIO – An East Side homeowner says he was trying to keep warm when he built a bonfire in his backyard which later spread to his home.

San Antonio firefighters received a 911 call around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

They say they found flames shooting through the roof of the home, located in the 300 block of Vine Street.

Everyone who was inside the home already had escaped safely, firefighters said.

The homeowner told firefighters he had built a bonfire in the backyard which got out of control.

That man later told KSAT 12 News he built the outdoor fire to keep warm.

He says he is not sure how or why it spread to the home, where he has lived for the past 50 years.

The homeowner said he had no insurance.

It appears the fire also may have cause some minor damage to the home next door.
