Northeast ISD to use metal detectors at varsity sporting events

Metal detectors cost $3,700 each

SAN ANTONIO – Northeast Independent School District spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor said the new school year brings new safety measures.

"This is the first year we'll be using metal detectors at all of our varsity sporting events," Chancellor said. "We discussed this at the end of last year, and made the decision to move forward starting with this school year."

The portable metal detectors cost $3,700 each. NEISD plans to use a dozen of them at Thursday night's Gucci Bowl, which features the Churchill Chargers taking on the Clark Cougars at Comalander Stadium.

"We really had no major problems at any of our sporting events. We just figured that, you know, in this day and age, you want to be as safe as possible," Chancellor said.

KSAT 12 asked Chancellor if the new Texas gun laws played a role in NEISD's decision.

"I don't think, not really. I wasn't privy to all those conversations," Chancellor said.

She expects the new layer of safety to be seamless, unless someone steps out of bounds.

"They will just walk through the metal detector. If they are abiding by the law, they'll just walk right through and be able to go to their seat,” Chancellor said.
