An off-duty San Antonio police officer was shot six times in an apparent road rage incident Tuesday night.

Police were called to AllStars Gentlemen's Club on the Northwest Side for a report of shots fired and found the officer, the accused gunman and a passenger of the accused gunman's vehicle with gunshot wounds.

San Antonio police Chief William McManus said the altercation began on the highway when a 25-year-old driver became upset after the police officer allegedly cut him off.

The driver and the off-duty officer pulled in to the strip club and the 25-year-old immediately opened fire on the officer, McManus said.

The officer was shot six times and was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition. McManus said the officer was able to retreat to his vehicle and grab a weapon to return fire.

The gunman was shot three times and a female passenger was grazed in the head, McManus said.

All three are expected to survive, McManus said.

Police have not identified the officer, gunman or the gunman's passenger, but said the officer is an 11-year veteran of the force.

McManus said it's unclear why they pulled into the parking lot, and made it clear the officer was not at the strip club at the time of the shooting.

McManus said he expects charges to be filed against the suspected gunman.
