Woman who killed ex-boyfriend to get new trial

Vanessa Cameron convicted of murder in 2012, given 70-year sentence

SAN ANTONIO – Texas' highest criminal appeals court will grant a new trial for a San Antonio woman who was convicted of murder back in 2012.

The court upheld the decision from the 4th Court of Appeals to throw out the murder conviction and 70-year prison sentence for Vanessa Cameron, who remains free on bail awaiting the new trial.

A jury convicted Cameron for orchestrating the 2010 kidnapping and murder of 26-year-old Samuel Allen Johnson Jr.

The court of appeals granted her a new trial a year ago, saying her "constitutional right to a public jury trial was violated."
