Shaka Smart agrees to be next head coach of Texas Longhorns men's basketball team

AUSTIN, Texas – Shaka Smart has agreed to become the new head basketball coach at the University of Texas, according to two separate reports Thursday night from CBS Sports and ESPN.

Smart, who spent the last six years at Virginia Commonwealth University, averaged 27 wins a season and led the Rams to the 2011 NCAA Final Four.

He replaces Rick Barnes, who parted ways with UT on Sunday after 17 seasons in Austin that included 16 trips to the NCAA Tournament.

UT Athletic Director Steve Patterson flew by private jet to Virginia to meet with Smart in person and offer him the job, arriving shortly after 5 p.m. San Antonio time.

A team meeting was held at 9 p.m. and VCU players were seen leaving, appearing to be upset. Terms of Smart's deal with Texas have not been released.
