โMaybe being a congressperson, maybe being a judge, doing anything politics or law-related just isnโt for me because I was so scared of what I had seen,โ Brown said. Angel Prado, a senior, said he plans a career in politics, someday perhaps serving in the same U.S. Capitol that was under siege. But patriotism does not extend to revolt or any other type of revolution,โ said Prado, a first-generation American born to an immigrant family. Prado said he believes itโs the duty of his generation to make sure the nation and its government stay on course. โThe actions that we have will forever change your history,โ she said.
Former US Capitol police officer โsickened and saddenedโ by riot
Back then, Salinas said, he never would have predicted what happened last Wednesday at the U.S. Capitol, where he began his law enforcement career. โWhen I saw the images, like every other American, I was sickened and saddened,โ Salinas said. Asked what role he believes the president played in the riot, Salinas said, โWe cannot have public officials out there inciting riots. Weโre better than that, and thatโs un-American.โWorking at the U.S. Capitol during Watergate, Salinas was in the hearing when the first article of impeachment against President Richard Nixon was read. And now to see the U.S. Capitol under siege, Salinas said, โIt makes Richard Nixon look like an altar boy.โRelated Stories:

After siege on US Capitol, 16 Texan members of Congress still objected election certification
While the effort to overturn the election was already doomed to fail, the rioting that occurred as Congress was beginning to debate the certification led several senators and representatives to drop their objections and vote in favor of the electoral college count. The most notable Texan on the list is Sen. Ted Cruz, who led the objection on the Senate side with Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley. Shortly before the electoral college count was certified, Cruz released a statement early Thursday morning saying his objection was โthe right thing to doโ based on the unfounded concerns over the election. โNow, we must come together and put this anger and division behind us,โ Cruz said. The senator said he now expects a peaceful transition into the Biden administration, which Trump committed to in a statement released Thursday morning.
Trinity University professor discusses historical riots contesting election results, significance of US Capitol breach
โThis is the day that we will remember,โ said Carey Latimore, Ph.D., an associate professor of history at Trinity University. โOne is the Wilmington riots of 1898, and thatโs a case in Wilmington, North Carolina, in which you had some rioters who disputed an election. And so, they decided to go and try to take over a town and sort of decertify, by their own self, a local election,โ Latimore said. As Congress moves forward with the certification of the electoral votes, Latimore said there needs to be an emphasis on vetting information. But, we found ways of moving forward,โ Latimore said.

Pence defies Trump, affirms Biden's win
(AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)WASHINGTON โ Vice President Mike Pence defied President Donald Trump early Thursday morning as he affirmed President-elect Joe Bidenโs November victory, putting an end to Trumpโs futile efforts to subvert American democracy and overturn the results of the election. Pence acknowledged that reality in a lengthy statement Wednesday laying out his conclusion that a vice president cannot claim โunilateral authorityโ to reject states' electoral votes. Pence's move was an expected outcome, but one that carved a dramatic fissure between Trump and Pence, his once most loyal lieutenant. โIf Mike Pence does the right thing we win the election,โ Trump wrongly told supporters, who later marched through Washington and stormed the Capitol. He repeatedly returned to Pence throughout his speech, voicing frustration as he tried to pressure the vice president to fall in line.
